Rodney Michael Payne, age 68, of Tyler,
AL died Friday, May 22, 2015 at Garden
Park Medical Center in Gulfport, MS.
Col. Payne was born August 15, 1946 in
Hattiesburg, MS. He is the son of the
late Gordon V. and Johnnie M. (Coon)
Payne. Brother, Victor J. Payne, also
predeceased him.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years:
Carlene (Smith) Payne, a daughter:
Mandy (Wes) Carroll of Birmingham, AL
and a son: Justin (Nicol) Payne of
Houston, TX; a sister: Becky Payne of
Richmond, VA and two brothers:
John (Mary) Payne of Oxford, MS, Van
(Gwen) Payne of Richmond, VA;
brother-in-law, Steve Smith of Hubbard,
OH; sister-in-law, Stella Martin of
Hubbard, OH.
Col. Payne also has five grandchildren.
Four grandsons; Clay Carroll, Will Carroll,
and BenCarroll of Birmingham, AL, and J.D.
Payne of Houston, TX, and a granddaughter;
Caitlin Payne of Houston, TX. He has
twelve nieces and nephews and numerous
first and second cousinsresiding on the
Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Col. Payne was a fighter pilot, flying
F-4s, while stationed at Ramstein Air
Force Base in Germany. He retired in 1994
with over 26 years of service. Col. Payne
was an Olmsted Scholar receiving a master’s
degree in international studies in Geneva,
Switzerland. He earned his undergraduate
degree in Political Science from Mississippi
State University (1968).

A graduate in French of the Defense
Language Institute he also completed
Squadron Officer School, Air Command
and Staff College, and Air War College
at Maxwell Air Force Base. He concluded
his military career as Vice Commandant
of the Air War College.
After military service, Col. Payne worked
at the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce and
in the information technology industry.
He was a member of the Baptist Faith,
Kiwanis Club, Wright Flyers and the Boys
& Girls Club all of Montgomery, AL.
The funeral will be held 11:00 am on
Tuesday, May 26 at Sigler Funeral Home,
4248 Main St.,Lucedale, MS with Rev.
Hal Bates officiating.
Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery,
Lucedale on Tuesday, May 26 at 12:00 pm.
