Cecil was the son of Gurney Hugh and Myrtle Bell Mahathey. He was a US Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II. He was part of a ten member crew on a B-17 flying fortress that flew 33 missions over Europe. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ellen Church in 1987 and his second wife, Mary Wellons in 2009.
