Walden Stout of Northwest Portland, a retired Portland attorney, died Friday in his home, apparently of a heart attack. He was 78.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Sunset Prebyterian Church. Burial will be in River View Cemetery.

A Portland native and lifelong resident of the city, he was born Feb. 19, 1913. He attended Ainsworth Grade School and Lincoln High School and graduated with honors from Reed College and Northwestern School of Law.

During World War II, he served as a judge advocate general for the U.S. Army. He married Lois B. von Salzen in 1946. After returning to the Portland area, Mr. Stout joined the Carl Davidson law practice. The firm later became Duffy, Stout, Georgeson & Dahl, and is now called Duffy, Kekel, Jensen & Bernard.

Mr. Stout practiced in the Portland area until his retirement in 1975. He had been a member of the Oregon State Bar since 1938, and was honored by the Northwestern School of Law, which named its faculty law library after him.

Mr. Stout had been active in numerous civic organizations, including the Mount Hood Kiwanis Camp for handicapped children and the Meals-On-Wheels program. He was a past board member for the Portland Center for Hearing and Speech, Waverly Country Club and the Multnomah Kennel Club. Mr. Stout was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Portland. His wife died in 1989.

Survivors include his sons, Gary W. of Portland and Stuart J. of Boulder, Colo.; brother, Lansing of Portland; sister, Antoinette Fennell of Gleneden Beach; and five grandchildren.
