John was born on December 1, 1921 in Dunlap, IL to William and Eva (Doyle) Colgan. He married Madeline Kopitsky on July 29, 1944 in Baltimore, MD. She preceded him in death on January 7, 2015. Also preceding him in death are his parents; his son, James Colgan; his brother, two sisters and two grandchildren.
Surviving are his daughter, Joanne Brasher of St. Louis, MO; his daughter-in-law, Beth Colgan of Chillicothe, IL; one grandchild, Natalie Colgan; four great-grandchildren, Marc, Jerami, Jessica, and Justin Brasher; and one great-great-grandchild, Corbin Brasher. Also surviving is one sister, Loretta Hornbacker of Peoria, IL.
John served in the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII. He then worked as a Reeler for Keystone Wire & Steel Co. until he retired in November of 1980. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Bartonville.
Services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 11am at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with visitation held one hour prior to the service at the church. Father David Heinz will be officiating. Burial will be at Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
