MAJ Bert F Teague died on February 1, 2008 at Hospice House in Concord, NH. He was born August 16, 1917, in Newport, NH; son of Frederick E. and Adeline (Rowe) Teague.
He lived in Goshen for 25 years on the family's dairy farm.
He attended Sunapee High School and graduated from Kimball Union Academy, Class of 1935. A dean's list student, he played football, baseball, and basketball. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1939.
From 1941 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Infantry Third Army. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and achieved the rank of major. As an officer in the 9th Division, he accepted the surrender of the German Black Sea fleet on the Danube River in 1945. Later, he was a member of the honor guard at General George Patton's funeral.
He married Joanne Condon of Newport on August 29, 1942 in Columbus, GA. After the war, the Teagues moved to Newport, where they lived until 1976 when they moved to Concord.
He had an active life in New Hampshire politics, first serving as a legislative assistant to the late U.S. Sen. Styles Bridges. He was then administrative assistant to the late Gov. Hugh Gregg. He was a candidate for the Second District Congressional seat in 1954 and 1962. He served as the executive director of the Nelson Rockefeller New Hampshire presidential primary campaign. He was the first executive director of the Republican state committee. While living in Concord, he served in the New Hampshre House of Representatives from 1988 to1994.
As a state legislator he fought for equitable funding for public education and a broad-base tax.
A salesman for much of his professional life, he was also manager and vice president of Anderson Nichols and Company for eight years and state director of the U.S. Small Business Administration for 11 years. He held the position of director of business development for New Hampshire Savings Bank for 12 years and was a business development representative for the Turner Group for six years.
He was a member of the Concord Country Club, the Passaconaway Men's Club, the Wonalancet Men's Club, Concord Racquet and Tennis Club, Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce, UNH Alumni Council, Friends of UNH Hockey and New Hampshire Senior Profiles.
He was an avid golfer and fan of UNH football and men's hockey.
Surviving family includes his wife, Joanne; three daughters, Virginia Holub of Charlottesville, VA, Calista Thurlow of Newport, Beverly Lillehei of Brookline, MA; and two sons, John Teague of Concord, and Tom Teague of Unity; one granddaughter, Katherine; and five grandsons, Reuben, Neal, Daniel, Alexander, and Christopher. He is also survived by sons-in-law Robert Holub, William Thurlow, Craig Lillehei; and two daughters-in-law, Christine Teague and Sally Teague as well as grandson Neal's wife, Mary.
Burial will be in Newport at the convenience of the family.
