Geneva Daily Times, Wed., July 25, 1951:

Missing Man's Body Found In Canal
Canandaigua, July 25—Body of Alfred J. Bristow, missing from his home here since Mar. 19, was found in the barge canal in Lyons last night. Louis Trombino of Lyons, operator of Lock 27, found the decomposed body wedged against a lock gate.
Mr. Bristow, 76, had been custodian of the county courthouse in Canandaigua.
Finding of his body wrote the last chapter to a "missing" story that went back to Mar. 20 when Mrs. Bristow told police her husband was gone.
First clues were a cane and a piece of rope found on the Guanarga creek bridge 3 1/2 miles north of Newark. Mrs. Bristow identified the cane as her husband's. The piece of rope aided yesterday in identification of the body. Police said it matched another piece found tied around Mr. Bristow's neck.
All during March and into April, police conducted dragging operations in the creek, believing Mr. Bristow's body would be found there.
Assisting in yesterday's investigation were Wayne county Sheriff John Lawrence of Lyons, Deputy Sheriff Earl Keckison, Deputy C. P. Denagle of Newark, John Wolvin, the sheriff's special deputy for crime work, and Sergeant A. Kappesser, State police.
