SUDDEN SUMMONS TO WELL KNOWN BUSINESS MAN

H. H. Wetzeler Has Held Many Positions Of Trust; Funeral Rites Today

Seldom has this community been so grievously shocked as when word was given out of the death of Herbert H. Wetzeler at his home here Monday morning from a sudden heart attack. He had been attending to his duties at the Akron Savings Bank as usual on Saturday and on Sunday attended church and spent the day with his family. He was stricken upon arising from bed Monday morning and he passed away before the arrival of the physician who was summoned. At the time of his passing away, Mr. Wetzeler had attained the age of 48 years, 10 months and 13 days.

Herbert Henry Wetzeler was born at Pomeroy, Iowa, January 30, 1900, the second son of Rev. and Mrs. Wm. R. Wetzzeler. As a child of seven years, he moved with his parents to Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1909 they moved to Schieswig, Iowa, where he attended school, finishing his high school work at Council Bluffs, graduating there in 1917. In 1918 he enrolled as a student at Iowa State College, Ames, also serving in the Student Army Training Corps. He started working in the Commercial Bank at Schleswig as a young man of 18. Then in 1919 he started work at Hornick, Iowa, and later in the bank at Varina, Iowa.

On October 20, 1920, he came to Akron and took a position with the First National Bank, remaining with this bank until October, 1944. At that time he went to Alta, Iowa, as cashier of the First Trust & Savings Bank, but returned to Akron in November, 1947, and became associated with the Akron Savings Bank, being cashier of that institution at the time of his death.

Mr. Wetzeler was united in marriage with Miss Yetta Cheely, of Hornick, Iowa, on November 30, 1920. He was a member of the Methodist church, of Akron, of which he was a board member; of the American Legion Post, Masonic Order Consistory and Lions Club. At Alta he belonged to the Rotartians. For several years he served on the Akron school board and was its president, also was a member of the Akron town council for several terms, and served on the Plymouth county draft board during World War II.

Left to mourn his untimely departure are, his wife, Yetta; one son, Charles; one daughter, Mary Ellen; his mother, Mrs. Mary Wetzeler of Oshkosh, Wis.; a brother, Rev. Walter R. Wetzeler, of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Riemersma of Hospers, Iowa, and Mrs. Hildegard Irion, of Oshkosh, Wis., and many other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Wm. R. Wetzeler.

Over a period of twenty-eight years Herb Wetzeler has been actively and closely identified with the business, civic and social affairs of Akron. In business, he was most efficient and always obliging. His counsel and advice was sought and freely given. His pleasant and agreeable nature won for him the high esteem and lasting friendship of all with whom he came in contact. His has been a great and valuable service to the community and his taking away in the prime of life leaves a void that is hard to fill.

To the wife and children, his aged mother and other near relatives there is poured out the sincerest sympathy of the entire community in their sudden and grievous bereavement, as well as to his close associates in business, to whom the sorrow and shock of his loss is also great.

Funeral services were at 2 o'clock this (Thursday) afternoon at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Orville N. Nelson. The singing was by a male quartet, comprised of H. J. Behmer, Karl Silkebakken, Harry B. Nelson and J. R. Shoulbert, with Mrs. Harry B. Nelson as accompanist. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.

A number of relatives and friends from a distance were in attendance at the funeral services.
