Harry Alfonso Reinkens

While the Reinkens family were living in Pasco, Harry was badly burnt in the bottle cleaning plant. He was apparently trying to start the fire in the boiler, when it blew up, burning him terribly. He spent a long time in the hospital recovering. A friend donated a skin graft to help heal his wounds.

Harry had a job as a courier-delivery man between businesses in Aberdeen. Harry had a 4 cylinder Indian motorcycle that he used to make his rounds. One time when Ancel was visiting Harry in Aberdeen, Harry offered Ancel the opportunity to take the motorcycle for a spin. Harry started the bike and sent Ancel off to try it out. Ancel had never ridden one before, he started up a driveway that was part gravel, part pavement. The bike stalled half way up the road then Ancel had to keep the heavy machine from rolling backwards and get it started, too. On the way back into Aberdeen, Ancel looked down at the speedometer and it said 70 mph. He was glad to get off of it.

Harry farmed at Satsop on the old Reinkens ranch. He had some dairy cows and raised crops. Grew peas for Blue Mountain cannery, they brought the peas on a wagon drawn with horses to the viner. The viners were stationary machines that separated the pea pods from the vines. After the horse had drawn the load, someone would pitch the vines and peas into the machine with a pitchfork. Harry also grew beets for seed. They built big bunkers to raise the beets in then dug the beets out by hand to store till next spring. Harry had two or three acres of pole peas that they shelled out by hand.

Harry and Nellie were living there in Satsop when one morning Harry wasn't feeling well so stayed in the house while Nellie went to do the milking. Nellie had just started the fire in the wood cook stove and had the dampers wide open and the fire had really taken off. Harry had sat down next to the stove to get the chill off, when he had an epileptic seizure and collapsed with his face against the stove. It was a terrible tragedy for the family. The wound healed but left a noticeable scar.

Nellie and son, Johnny's wife were both going to have babies at the same time. When Johnny and Billie came up to Harry and Nellie's house to tell them about the new grandchild to be. Nellie told Johnny about the new brother or sister that they were expecting. Harry didn't want the new baby to only know him with that scar on his face so he went to Seattle to have the scar removed. While he was on the operating table he passed away. Family thought it was due to a brain hemorrhage or that a blood clot had moved from the back of his neck.

Jake Reinkens came to the place where Johnny and Billie were staying at her parents home and told them of Harry's death. It was very expected. After Harry died, Nellie took David and stayed with her folks in Woodinville, Wa. She came back to Satsop about 1954 and bought a place north of the present Satsop Cemetery across the road from the old dairy ranch. She went to work in a furniture factory in Aberdeen. About 1962 she started working at the Elma Post Office where she worked until she retired. She loved playing bingo.

David has worked as logger and in shake mills in the Grays Harbor area. He went his first 6 years of school in Satsop and graduated from Elma High School. He was drafted into the Army and served out his enlistment.
