Meredith was from Ireland, quite possibly County Armagh as that was where he married Eliza Donnelly in 1838.
Meredith and Eliza emigrated first to Quebec, British North America c 1840-1841, then made their way down to South Portland, Maine about 1866 to live in Ligonia, a company town created for the Portland Rolling Mills. Meredith worked there for some years.
