"Sidney Athol Ward, 77, of Diamond Springs, died May 9. He was born Feb. 9, 1924 in Sacramento.

Mr. Ward's family moved to El Dorado County when he was a year old. After his father was killed when he was 5, his family moved to Diamond Springs and purchased and began operation of Ward's Grocery store. Mr. Ward grew up living above the store.

Soon after graduating from El Dorado High School, Mr. Ward joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served with the Eighth Air Force in Europe in World War II as a tail gunner on heavy bombers. He flew 33 successful missions. Although his bomber group suffered 93 percent shoot-down during the war, he was uninjured. For his service, he received many awards including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

In 1948 Mr. Ward married Harriot "Happy" Wiglesworth.

After the war Mr. Ward worked for C. S. Collins at the Studebaker dealership in Placerville. In 1954 he became a carpenter, building and remodeling homes. He retired in 1981 to begin working at boating, traveling, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and other full time recreation.

Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Happy Ward, his children, Pam Alexander, Peggy Riha, Larry Ward and Wendell Ward, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two sisters.

Remembrances may be sent to Shriners Hospital, Stockton Blvd., Sacramento 95817.

Memorial services will be conducted on May 14 at 11 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge in Placerville.

Arrangements were made by Chapel of the Pines Funeral Home."
