John (Jack) Robert Battistello was born in Centerville on Aug. 20, 1936. He was the son of John and Mary Buttel Battistello who were also born in Centerville. His parents had bought a farm south of Pella in 1934 but Jack continued living in Centerville with his Aunt Elizabeth Battistello and his grandparents, John Battista and Mary Pellin Battistello, while he attended first and second grade school. He then joined his parents on the farm at Pella and attended the Amsterdam Country School.

Jack remembered riding a horse to school and taking out the coal. Jack's formal education concluded there as he had to work in order to enable the family to be able to continue farming financially. Jack's working discipline remained a part of him the remainder of his lifetime. He used his hands, was left-handed by nature but forced to be right-handed, and became a self-taught mechanic.

Jack farmed and worked in the coal mines. He later worked as a mechanic for Geetings, Inc., Pella Construction, Pella Implement, and Vermeer Manufacturing Company. His working discipline often indicated it was time for a change and on Nov. 1, 1988, he and his wife, Mary, became owners of J & M Repair in Pella. Jack remained a vital part of the operation as long as his health permitted. He never lost his desire to work but was somewhat limited in what he was able to do lately. His life centered around his family, the family farm where he lived almost his entire lifetime, and being down by the Des Moines River.

Jack and Shirley Joyce Thomas were united in marriage on April 30, 1955, and to this union four children were born: John Ernest, Teresa Maria, Richard Timothy and Cynthia Susanna. On Feb. 24, 1968, he and Mary Helen Breuklander were united in marriage at Unionville, Mo., and to this marriage two daughters were born: Patricia Lynn and Jacqueline Kay. Jack and Mary complemented each other in many ways, with their work habits, and enjoying their family.

Just this past Sunday, May 10, 2015, they were all together and on Saturday morning, May 16, 2015, Jack passed away at their residence at the age of 78 years. Those who will cherish his memory are his wife, Mary; six children and their families: John Battistello of Knoxville, Teresa and Mark Peiffer of Johnston, Tim and Chris Battistello of Pella, Cindy and Jim Kelly of Newton, Pattie and Dan Beatty of Hickory, N.C., Jacque and Jason Schroder of Pella.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Battistello, and his sister, Marilyn Battistello Hamre (Chi Chi). His extended family includes the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jim and Anna Breuklander of Oskaloosa, Bill and Stella Breuklander of Oklahoma, Larry and Becky Breuklander, Linda and Willis Vander Horst all of Pella. Jack will be remembered for his many friends, his love for fishing, and his enjoyment with having company visit and entertaining people.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pella on Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
