Layton Man
Kills Wife
And Himself

LAYTON — A man and his wife died Christmas Eve in what officers called an apparent murder-suicide shooting at their Layton home.

LeRoi Day, Davis County sheriff, identified the dead as Donald E. Bennett, 37, and his wife, Isabelle A. Bennett, 34.

The sheriff said evidence indicated that Bennett apparently shot his wife five times with a German Luger pistol, then put a bullet into his own head.

The bodies were found by Don Cornia, neighbor and friend of the family, who had gone to the Bennett home with his wife to pay a Christmas Eve call.

Mr. Cornia said the Bennett couple had been in a liquor store where he works earlier in the evening and extended the invitation. They did not make a purchase.

Mr. Cornia spotted Mr. Bennett on the floor while he stood at the front door of the Bennett home ringing the doorbell.

After he entered the home through a rear door he summoned a nearby doctor. Layton Chief of Police Lee Nalder, the Utah Highway Patrol and Davis County sheriff were then called in to investigate.

The woman's body was found in the bathroom of the home and her husband was found just outside in a hall, the gun between his legs.

Sheriff Day said both died instantly, apparently between 7:30 and 8 p.m. There were no signs of violence in the home.

The two were home alone when the shooting occurred. A daughter, Ellen, about 17, was "out on a date" and was headed off before she could return home, the sheriff said.

She was a daughter of Mrs. Bennett by a former marriage. One other married daughter was Mr. Bennett's, also by a former marriage.

The couple operated a small drive-in type restaurant, The Dipper, located on U. S. Highways 89-91 in Layton. They
closed the restaurant on Thanksgiving day.

It was believed that Mr. Bennett has not been employed since that time.

Sheriff Day said a motive had not been found.

An inquest into the shooting is scheduled for tomorrow, afternoon at 4 in the Layton Town Hall.
