Sculptor. He is probably best known as the designer of Abraham Lincoln's tomb in Springfield, Illinois, for which he also created a larger than life bronze statue of the President. The work was completed in 1874. Mead's other notable works include "America" (1868 to 1874) for the Soldiers Monument in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and the statue of Ethan Allen (1876) that is displayed in the US Capitol's National Statuary Hall. A native of Brattleboro, Vermont, he settled in Florence, Italy in 1862.
