Anthony Granville Gibson Sawyer was born Nov. 7, 1934 to the late Clara Sawyer. Tony, as he was known to many, was born and raised In Key West, Florida and attended Douglas High School graduating with the class of 1953. 

He was class vice president and a proud member of the Douglass High School “Tigers” basketball team. Upon graduation, Tony entered the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1956. 

After his tenure in the Army, Tony relocated to New York City. During his time in New York City, Tony was employed by New York City Housing. In 1971, he relocated back to his hometown of Key West and was employed with City Electric. Not too long afterward, he became employed with the U.S. Postal Service, serving as a bulk mailroom tech for many years before retiring in 2009 after 38 years.

A proud, faithful and dedicated member of the Masonic Family, he was the oldest member of The Historic Union Lodge #47 F & M P.H.A, previously serving the positions of secretary and trustee, The Order Of the Mystic Shrine Kismet Temple #87, The Key West Consistory #4, 32nd ° Masons, and the past Worthy Patron Of Myrna E. Sawyer Key Of The Gulf chapters #53 and #5 Order Of The Eastern Stars. He was also A dedicated member of the American Legion Post #168.

Surviving to cherish his memories are his children and grandchildren: Vickie Sawyer (Jason & Jalissa); Kim Sawyer-Qareeb (Fulton) — (Rajaee, Qandranea, Jasmine); Troy Brown (Michelle) — (Daphne, Devontshae, Brit’nae, Thai’quondra); Robert Reid Jr. (Ingrid) — (Jocelynn, Mercedes, Savanah , Janessa); and Esa Sawyer (Kevin) — (Anthony, Kevon). His loving sister Barbara Mae Murray Sawyer, nephew Issac Mcgraw (Reshant), one whom he looked at as his daughter Caroline Stubbs-Sylla (Steve) — (Naiilah, I’Naijah); and his loving and devoted companion; Constance Teate.

He will be missed by all who knew him, young and old.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, May 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. and funeral services will be Saturday, May 23 at 1 p.m. — both at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 717 Simonton St. 

Interment at City of Key West Cemetery. Castillo & Thurston’s Key West Mortuary, Inc. are in charge of arrangements.
