In 1942 he married Laura E. Watson in Rapid City and they had six children.
John left GE and returned to Rapid City and worked for Montana Dakota Utilities. In 1950, he and another School of Mines graduate formed a partnership and started a consulting engineering company. He worked designing lines location for the REA in Rapid City.
He was a registered professional engineer and land surveyor for much of his life retiring in 1962.
He farmed the land on which he was born he loved the country and was a good steward of the land. His wife died in 1983, inn 1984 he married Betty Anne Bahr-Lazor, she died in 2010. He married for a third time in 2011.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Patrick and Daniel, and sister Mary Jane Carrieres and step-daughter Nancy Lazor.
