Idella M. Brooks , 85 of Chebanse passed away Saturday May 16th at Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka.

Burial will take place at Kankakee Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Aroma Township following the services.

Idella was born March 13, 1930 in Kankakee, to Arthur and Gladys (Cailteux) Meyer.

On August 6, 1960, she married James Brooks, and raised three children in Kankakee County. At the time they met, James was a school counselor for the Kankakee School District, and Idella a secretary. Idella was a homemaker for most of her parenting years, and later became a familiar face when she worked at local stores including Books Plus, Kidz Togz, and Donna’s. She enjoyed seeing her regular customers, as well as meeting new faces, each time she went to work.

As a mother, she was always supportive of her children’s endeavors, encouraging them to be active in their many interests. As they grew to adults, she enjoyed her new role as grandmother and had a great time “spoiling” each and every one of her 10 grandchildren.

Although her illness with COPD was a long and difficult journey, she remained positive and happy, always offering a smile to and genuine concern to those who helped take care of her. She was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kankakee, and an avid member of the Red Hat Society.

Idella is survived by her children, James (Mindy Steele) Brooks Jr. of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Deborah Morrison of Chebanse, and Eric (Jennie Potter) Brooks of Oak Harbor, Washington; her grandchildren, James III ‘Jay” and Samuel Brooks of Virginia Beach; James “Alex” (Alicia) Morrison of Limestone; Jessica, Micheal, Evan and Emily Morrison of Chebanse; and Elizabeth “Ella,” Christopher, and Charles “Charlie” Brooks of Oak Harbor, Washington; and great-grandson Jayden Reyes.

She is also survived by her sister, Lois (Robert) Teske of Buckley; brothers Vernon (Judith) Meyer and Kenneth (Elaine) Meyer of Chebanse; Merle Meyer of Minnesota; Richard Meyer of Wisconsin; brother-in-law Louis Wolfe of Chebanse; and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James, brother; Gerald Meyer, and sister Wanda (Meyer) Wolfe.
