Takaka Pioneer
John was baptised on the 5th February in the parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Woolwich, Kent, England (this is the district of Woolwich Arsenal). He was the third son of John and Sarah Cann of Woolwich Common, Kent, England.
He emigrated to New Zealand in 1851 settling first in Petone, Wellington where he married Ann Luxford before moving to Takaka in 1855.
Working as a Lime dealer at Motupipi, a digger at Anatoki, Canns Point. He was a builder and bricklayer at Takaka and leased the Waitapu wharf. John was also chair of the Takaka School Committee.
He died aged 72 years and is remebered on the Takaka Pioneers' Memorial.
