Danny L. Foster, 77, a former Loudonville resident, died at his home in Sarasota, FL on October 14, 2014. Danny was born in Loudonville, on August 20, 1937, to the late Carl and Thelma Foster. He was a 1955 graduate of Loudonville High School and served in the US Navy where he became interested in meteorology. He ventured to the Arctic and Antarctica in international meteorological research. Danny became the first human to arrive in Vostok, the coldest place on earth in Nov. 1962. Three Australians, one American (Danny), and a New Zealander, traveled over 900 miles of uncharted territory known as the Arctic Plateau. A book entitled "The Coldest Place on Earth" by Robert Thomson detailed their expedition where temperatures reached 100 degrees below zero. Danny went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from the University of Michigan and served his career as head of Overseas Operations for the National Weather Service, NOAA. He served as Chairman of the Geneva-based World Meteorological Organization’s Technical Assistance Program and coordinated agreements between nations. Danny is survived by his wife, Lois Grim Foster; 1 brother, James Richard Foster of Mansfield; 5 nieces: Kathy Hartshorne (Michael) Baldner of Loudonville; Linda (Dr. Carlos) McFarlane, Judy Yohman of Mansfield, Erin (Michael) Barnhouse, and Jennifer Himes; 4 nephews: James (Kelly) Hartshorne of Dublin, Ed (Pam) Foster of Mansfield, Douglas Grim and Gibson Grim of Dalton. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Kathleen Foster Hartshorne; a brother, William C. Foster; and a nephew, Toby Grim. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 10:30am in LINDSEY FUNERAL HOME, LOUDONVILLE. Private burial will be in Loudonville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Tidewell Hospice, The Humane Society, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
