Joseph served with the Confederacy during the Civil War, with Company A, 42nd NC infantry. He was captured by the Union at Fort Fisher, and was at Point Lookout Prison starting on 27 Dec 1864. He was released and signed an Oath of Alligiance on 20 June 1865 (submitted by Brady Kerr).

Joseph (went by Joe) D. Sink was the ninth of eleven known children of John Sprecker Jacob Sink (1788-1866) and Mary Magdalena Clodfelter (1791-1870), who married 11 Jan 1808 at Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina.

Joe married his second cousin, Wilhelmina Sink (1828-1900) in c1849 in presumably North Carolina. Joe and Wilhelmina were the parents of eight known children, namely:

1. John Sink (???-young)
2. Gideon D. Sink (1850-1917)
3. Jacob Lindsay Sink (1852-1934)
4. Amanda Jane Sink Zimmerman (1855-1914)
5. Mary Sink Leonard (1857-1937)
6. David Henderson Sink (1860-1934)
7. John Franklin Sink (1863-1918)
8. Robert Lee Sink (1867-1900)
