Merritt's father and great-grandfather of Absalom Dennis Merritt, was a farmer near New York City, and leased forty acres of his land for ninety-nine years to the US Government to build a naval school, and the lease is still in the Merritt family.

He immigrated to America, and found employment in the office of the St. Louis Globe. He subsequently moved to Galena, IL, and edited the Galena Gazette until his death.
