Absalom Dennis Merritt is a son of Joseph H. Merritt, who was born in Seneca County, N. Y., in 1807. Roger Merritt, Joseph H. Merritt's father and great-grandfather of Absalom Dennis Merritt, was a farmer near New York City, and leased forty acres of his land for ninety-nine years to the US Government to build a naval school, and the lease is still in the Merritt family.

Absalom Dennis Merritt's mother, Mary A Jones Merritt, was the second marriage to his father, Joseph H. Merritt in 1846 after the death of his first wife, Sarah Van Fossen Merritt.

Mary Ann Jones Merritt, was born in London, England. Her father, Connelly Jones was a native of Ireland. He learned the printer's trade, and moving to England, worked on the London Times. He immigrated to America, and found employment in the office of the St. Louis Globe. He subsequently moved to Galena, IL, and edited the Galena Gazette until his death.

Absalom Dennis Merritt was born in Jones County, near Olin, Iowa, June 16, 1850, and was about four years old when his parents brought him to Jackson County.

Absalom was married in Bellevue, July 12, 1871, to Miss Josephine Jenkins, a daughter of the Rev. William Jenkins, a native of Wales.

Absalom & Josephine had one son, Lumon G. Merritt born January 14, 1873 and died 5/27/1915 at the age of 32.
