Doris Bertha Meta Haase was ushered into eternal life by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 7, 2003 at Bethany Home with her daughters at her side. Doris was born on November 27, 1921, to Martin and Lena (Steinhorst) Melchert on a farm near Bagley, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. Following graduation from Bagley High School in 1940 she attended the Staples Normal School for rural teachers. Doris went on to teach 1st through 8th grades at the Dear Creek School, the Jack Pine Reservation School and the Pine Center School near Zerkel. She then moved to Alexandria where she taught 1st through 4th grades at Zion Lutheran School for a year.
Doris then changed careers working for North American Creameries where she met a kind and gentle man named Merle Haase. They were married December 22, 1946 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria. When her three children were old enough, Doris returned to her first love, teaching 5th grade and later kindergarten at Zion Lutheran School. Her final job was at the Gilmore Monuments office.
Doris was a gifted teacher both in school and Sunday school, using her wisdom to encourage and guide countless children, always sharing truths from God's Word. Her generous heart led her to buy and assemble supplies for baby layettes and school kits to be shipped to children overseas. Doris was active in women's groups in the churches she attended, making quilts for Lutheran World Relief, participating in mother/daughter programs and sharing truths from her cross collection. Her children and grandchildren will testify of her generosity and creativity, providing many wonderful examples, gifts and memories.
At Christmas time, 2002, Doris learned she had cancer. Because of her trust in Christ as her Savior, she desired to be with Him in heaven soon. God's love and comfort sustained Doris and her family during her remaining short journey from this life to heaven.
Doris is survived by her children: Bonnie (Kenneth) Hegner of Neenah, WI; Jim (Colleen) Haase of Maplewood; Patti (Kevin) Biggar of Alexandria; sisters: Dorothy Winkelmann of Fosston and Edna Munter of Fosston; eight grandchildren and great grandchildren. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merle; and great grandchild, Jaden Haase.
A funeral service was held February 11, 2003 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Rev. John Peshek was the officiant. Interment followed in the Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Pallbearers were Kevin Biggar, Jonathan Hegner, Eric Haase and Nathan Haase. Arrangements with Anderson Funeral Home.
