Rev. Peter T. McKeown, M.S., of The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette, died suddenly on Thursday (October 11, 2001) in Hartford. He was born in Worcester, MA, June 3, 1929, son of the late Peter and Hannah (Fleming) McKeown. He attended Sacred Heart Academy, Worcester, MA, before entering the La Salette Seminary, Hartford.
He made First Profession of Vows on July 2, 1953, at La Salette Novitiate, Bloomfield, and continued studies for the priesthood at La Salette Seminary, Ipswich, MA and was ordained a priest in Ipswich on April 25, 1959. After ordination, he served as a teacher and prefect at La Salette Seminary, Hartford. He also served as Prefect of Discipline and later as Principal of La Salette Seminary, Cheshire.
He served as Assistant Pastor at St. Peter, Dagenham, England; St. Francis of Assisi, Cartersville, GA; Our Lady of Prompt Succor, Golden Meadow, LA; Blessed Sacrament, Atlanta, GA; St. Mary, Jewett City; Blessed Trinity, Orlando, FL and Pastor at Our Lady of La Salette, Canton, GA; St. Peter, Dagenham, England; St. Francis of Assisi, Cartersville, GA and Annunciation, Havelock, NC, until his retirement as Senior Priest at Holy Trinity Church, Westfield, MA in August of this year. Father McKeown worked with Marriage Encounter for a number of years in the Florida and Georgia area. He is survived by a sister, Sr. Elizabeth McKeown, S.S.J., of Holyoke, MA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated on Monday, October 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the La Salette Chapel, 85 New Park Ave., Hartford. Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Calling hours will be on Sunday, at the La Salette Community House, 85 New Park Ave., Hartford, from 2-5 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to Missionaries of La Salette Retirement Fund, 915 Maple Avenue, Hartford, CT 06114-2330.
