Emerson was the son of Silas Pratt DeLand and Lucinda G. Bennett. Most of the rest of his family was buried at Pleasant Street Cemetery in Rutland County.

His father was killed when a horse he was shoeing kicked him in 1860. One sister died young and another, Kate, went west to Illinois with their mother Lucinda. Another brother, Capt. DeLamer DeLand of Civil War fame, also went west to Ohio, then Illinois.
