Clarence Elbert Smith, 71, of Odessa, died April 30, 2001, at the Medical Center of Independence. Mr. Smith was born July 9, 1929, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

He was a payroll accountant for C&D Sugar of Chatham, Ontario, for seven years, and taught elementary school in Roseville, MI for 24 years, retiring in 1986. He then began full-time farming on the family farm northwest of Odessa.

He was a graduate of Graceland College, Lamoni, IA, and Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, receiving his master¹s degree from Eastern Michigan University.

He was a lifetime member and minister in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Community of Christ). He ministered in many capacities including pastor in Blenheim, Ontario, Warren and East Detroit, MI, and in the Odessa congregation. He was ordained as a high priest and was serving on the Central Missouri State High Council.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Smith Sr., in 1953, his mother, Millie Smith, in 1998, and two sisters, Vivian and Irene.

His survivors include his wife of 43 years, Elaine (Farrow) Smith; four children, Todd Smith, Scott Smith, Cindy Mason and Duane Smith, all of this area; his siblings, Marjorie Davie of St. Thomas, Ontario; Mavis McDonald of Petrolla, Ontario; Millie Harkness of Corunna, Ontario; Larry Smith of Madoc, Ontario; Joyce Heath of Oak Grove, MO; and David Smith of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and five grandchildren.

Friends may call Thursday at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral home, Odessa. Services will be held Friday at the Community of Christ, Odessa, followed by graveside services at Greenton Cemetery.
