A Feldwebel and Flugzeugführer [pilot] serving with 9 Staffel Kampfgeschwader 77, he died on a mission against London when his aircraft (Ju88A-1; wn: 3168; 3Z+FT) was shot down by Hurricanes of 320 Squadron RAF, crashing at Vange Creek, Basildon, Essex. The Beobachter [observer] Gefreiter Hans Buschbeck and the
Bordschütze [air gunner] Gefreiter Paul Lesker also died.

Original burial reported to have taken place on 25 September 1940 in Grave 686 at Eastbrookend Cemetery, Dagenham, Essex.
