A native of Burlington, NC and the oldest of four brothers, Dan was born on June 21, 1939 to Wallace and Edna Gee. "Danny" as he was known while growing up was baptized as an infant and raised in the Lutheran church. He learned the catechism and developed a lifelong love for church music. Two of his brothers, Bill and John reside in Burlington and brother Tommy lives in Nice, CA.
Early in his life Danny came up against two close brushes with death – a ruptured appendix and a near drowning. He often wondered why his life was spared only to conclude: "to try to make the world a little bit better". As the old gospel hymn expresses, "Brighten the corner where you are."
Danny graduated from high school in 1957, and from Elon College (now University) in 1961 with a BA in Business and History. He was commissioned an ensign in 1962 in the Supply Corps - a specialty that emphasizes the concept of service to others.
His afloat supply tours were USS John Paul Jones (DD-932), USS San Marcos (LSD-25), Assistant Supply Officer, USS Yellowstone (AD-27) and Supply officer, USS Lexington (AVT-16) helping the ship earn the Navy "Blue E" for excellence in supply support. Shore tours were Assistant Navy Exchange Officer, Naval Station Norfolk; project leader to develop a new set of shipboard supply procedures, Naval Supply Systems Command, Washington, DC; Navy Supply Corps School, Athens, GA to establish the Navy Supply Corps Foundation and the Supply Corps Alumni Association; Naval Postgraduate School Monterey, CA for a MS in Logistics; Navy Supply Depot, Subic Bay, Philippines as director of computer systems analysts, and upon promotion to commander, that of Comptroller; Navy Exchange officer, NAS Pensacola to open the Navy's newest shopping mall; Supply Officer, for the western Pacific, Atsugi, Japan; Vice Commander, Navy Resale and Services Support Office, Staten Island, NY; and finally, his selection as Commanding Officer, Supply Center in Pensacola, FL until his retirement in 1991.
Awards include two Legions of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, Navy Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
As a young lieutenant frequenting social gathering spots in Virginia Beach, he met a young school teacher, Joanne Louise Jorgensen. A late afternoon spin in his new Corvette led to conversation, dinner, and a relationship that they quickly realized would last a lifetime. Only a month later they were married – forming an unshakable bond of love that has lasted 47 years. Out of this union came three children, Eric (wife Lauren of Covington, LA); Amy (husband LTC Jim Collins of Ft. Riley, KS); Jennifer of Pensacola and their lovely granddaughters, Anna Claire and Erin Gee and Gretchen Collins.
Following his naval career, Dan obtained a MS degree in accounting from UWF becoming a CPA and maintained a small practice for almost fifteen years, serving a number of clients, especially the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. For over the past twelve years Dan managed Scenic Terrace until his retirement in December 2014 when he was diagnosed with an incurable and rare bone cancer. This proved to be a great challenge for him and Joanne as they fought the disease.
As a resident of Pensacola from 1978, Dan was active in St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving on the congregation council as treasurer and in the past as president. He organized and taught an adult Sunday School class until December 2014. He faithfully walked his dogs in the neighborhood as long as his health permitted.
In his later years, Dan took up a new hobby building rubber-powered stick and tissue model airplanes and became a member of the Pensacola Free Flight Team where he served as Vice President. Dan and Joanne fulfilled many dreams with some wonderful trips and visits with family and friends, both in the US and overseas.
On May 15, 2015, the fight was over and Charles Daniel Gee, age 75 went to his eternal rest.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 21 from 6pm to 8pm at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will begin with special music at 10:30am on Friday, May 22, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 4600 North 9th Avenue. Interment will follow the service at 1:15pm in Barrancas National Cemetery.
