Deceased Name: Richard Earl Mercer
Richard Earl Mercer of Lawrence, Kansas died September 3 after battling cancer. Cremation has taken place. No formal services are planned.
He was born May 21, 1931 to Earl and Grace (Douglass) Mercer in Beloit, Kansas, the ninth of ten children. He was a 1950 graduate of Wellington High School and earned a degree in business from Wichita State University in 1957.
After serving two years in the United States Army, he was employed as a buyer at Boeing Aircraft Co.
In 1961, Richard and his wife Sherrill became managing partners of Monkey Island Airport Resort on Grand Lake of the Cherokees in Oklahoma. He served two terms as president of the Grand Lake Association and a number of years on the Grove School Board.
A dedicated blood donor, he gave blood a total of 93 times. He was a life long supporter of young people, especially in the area of athletics.
Richard considered Grove his hometown and fondly told stories of the many people he encountered as a Grove resident.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sherrill Bliss Mercer and three daughters: Pamela Hilt (husband, Sam, children, Emma and Siena) of San Gusmé, Italy; Kim Mercer (partner, Sharon Shepard) Winfield, KS; and Linda Stump (husband, Gerald, children, Nate and Sydney) Spring Grove, PA. Sisters, Betty Doherty of Mission, KS and Mary Jo Powers of Winfield, KS. Many nieces and nephews.
