Nelson fought in the Civil War in the Confederate Army and was captured at the battle of Gladeville, VA. He was a prisoner of war for about 18 months in camps where the prisoners were tortured and starved. After the war, he was released in a prisoner exchange and had to walk home from Point Lookout, Maryland to Floyd County, Kentucky.
He returned home to his family where he continued to farm and raise his family. In his later years became a Deacon at his church.
