Motion Picture Director, Screenwriter. After a career as a Broadway theater actor, he directed a number of motion pictures for Warner Bros. Studios, including "Mr. Skeffington", (1944) starring Bette Davis, "The Hasty Heart", (1949) starring Ronald Reagan and "The Young Philadelphians" (1959) with Paul Newman. He also wrote the screenplay for the film "Crime School", (1938) which starred Humphrey Bogart and the Dead End Kids. During the early 1950s with United States Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-Communism "Witch Hunt" at its peak, his career suffered a setback from accusations of ties to communist organizations. He was able to revive his reputation later in the decade by establishing himself as a steady television director working on such shows as "77 Sunset Strip". He continued to direct movies and television shows into the 1980s. He admitted to be romantically involved with such screen legends as Joan Crawford, Bette Davis and Rita Hayworth.
