Playwright and Actor. He is considered a forerunner of German Expressionism. Wedekind's dramas attacked what he saw as the hypocrisy of middle-class morality, and treated sexual themes with a revolutionary frankness. The most famous of them are "The Awakening of Spring" (1891), "Earth Spirit" (1895), and "Pandora's Box" (1903). The last two, which center on a man-eating character named Lulu, were the basis of the film "Pandora's Box" (1928), starring Louise Brooks, and Alban Berg's opera "Lulu" (1935). Wedekind was born in Hannover, Germany, and grew up in Switzerland. He left his wealthy family and worked odd jobs before settling on a stage career. His plays were frequently censored or banned, and none were performed as he wrote them during his lifetime. He died in Munich.
