Jennie “Jean” Barnes, 80, a longtime Berea resident, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at Abbewood in Elyria, where she had resided for the past two years. Born September 7, 1934 in Toledo, Jean was the younger, by 15 minutes, of twins born to Albert and Margaret (Boone) Barnes.

Jean attended Toledo Public Schools and was a 1952 graduate of Whitmer High School. Jean received a BS in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from Bowling Green State University in 1956, an MS in Education from Kent State University in 1962 and a BS in History from Akron and Toledo Universities in 1969. Jean spent 34 years as a teacher, beginning in the Clyde, Ohio, Public Schools, where she taught Health, Physical Education, Science and Driver’s Ed. She spent her last 31 years as an educator in the Strongsville City School District, where she taught Health, Physical Education and History and in 1981-82 was named a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar. Following her retirement in 1990, Jean became involved in genealogy and commercially published three family histories, which took her to the Isle of Man on two occasions. Jean served two terms as President of the Southwest Cuyahoga Genealogical Society and was also the Cleveland District Trustee of the Ohio Genealogical Society Board from 1995-2009. Other hobbies included quilting, crocheting, cross stitching, woodworking and officiating basketball and volleyball.

Jean is survived by many cousins, two nephews and their wives and children and her very dear friend, Loretta Vargo of Elyria, who cared for Jean for the past several years.

Friends may call at Baker-Osinski-Kensinger Funeral Home, 206 Front St., Berea, Sunday, May 17, 2015, from 3 to 6 P.M. A private burial will be held at Grandview Cemetery, Strasburgh, Ohio.
