William Harry Landers was born on May 2, 1922 in Madison, Madison County, Alabama. He was the son of John William Landers and Mattie Ragan. His parents were born in Georgia and Alabama, respectively. His three brothers were Arthur "Almous" and Walter "Monroe" Landers of Huntsville and Thomas "Tom" Landers of Madison. The youngest of four brothers, who in 1930, were living on a farm in Madison, where William attended local schools. He graduated from Madison High School on May 2, 1941, his 19th birthday and the next day he enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corps. He worked as a store clerk in Madison. On his enlistment papers it gives his occupation as an actor.

He was stationed in England from August 1942.

His last assignment was a waist gunner in the the 813th Bomb Squadron of the 482nd Bomb Group; it was the first and only Pathfinder group in the US Eighth Air Force at the time with H2S radar allowing bombing through overcast (BTO).

He died when his B-17, serial number 42-5793 nicknamed Stinky, crashed at Brome, Suffolk, en route to leading the 100th Bomb Group.
 
His remains were returned to his family for reburial. His prominent, thoughtful headstone is a tribute by his family that loved and missed him. His name is between his mother and father.
