Frank P. Backster was born 4/28/1833 in Brooklyn NY. His parents, Charles C. Backster and Lucy Ann Price, had moved there from Sussex, NJ.
He died 3/24/1871 in Kingsland, NJ. He is buried with his parents in Newton Cemetery in Newton, Sussex County, NJ.

Frank married Abby Lenington Thorne, a descendant of Revolutionary War patriot Ensign Thomas Lenington, on 5/15/1856 in Brooklyn, NY.
Their children were John E. Backster (b. 1859), Grace Darling Backster (b. 1861), Florence N. Backster (b. 1863) and Frank (b. ?)

Frank was elected an active member of the Light Guard Armory in Brooklyn NY on 12/4/1857. Dues were 50 cents a month, with regular drills every Friday evening.

He enlisted on February 2, 1864 at Jersey City, NJ. He was assigned to Co. H of the 33rd Regiment NJ Infantry, U.S. Vols., a Zouave regiment.
On April 23, 1864 he was ordered to report to Gen. Harding, 2nd Brigade, Lookout Valley, TN.
The muster rolls list him as absent, sick in hospital in Nashville after May 1864. He appears on the Muster-out Roll dated July 17, 1865 at Wash, DC.

It does not appear that he returned to his family, his wife having remarried in 1867. I have been unable to locate any hospital records from Nashville.
When my sister and I visited the Newton Cemetery, we had just about given up finding his grave when we noticed that a number of the stones had the name at the top. We pushed back the grass from the top of the one with coordinating dates and found his name. I don't know if the stone was originally upright or laid flat, as it is now.

Many of his National Archive muster records list him as Baxter. I have also seen him listed as Backter.
