Polly Tryphena Fairchild Bryson, was born December 11, 1846 in Conewango, Catteraugus County, New York, the daughter of John and Tyrphena Pomeroy Fairchild. She came to Utah with her mother, a convert, in 1859, and lived in Salt Lake City until she married Smauel on May 25, 1867. They are the parents of nine children: Sarah Tryphena, John Samuel, Eliza Snow, Charles Melvin, Ellen, David Hyrum, Margaret, Wilford Woodruff and Luther Pomeroy.

Tryphena besides being a farmers wife and caring for a family, gave time to community needs. She taught school several terms, helping to provide for the family while her husband was away and she found time to work in the Church. She was secretary of the first Primary organization in the ward and served as secretary of the Relief Society for many years. She was president of the YLMIA for 25 years.

Tryphena died March 25, 1949 and is buried in the Woodruff Cemetery.
