Friends, family were important to accident victim
Friday, June 16, 2006
Lifelong Staten Islander Amanda Sue Forsyth, a sophomore at Susan Wagner High School, died Tuesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. She was 16.

Her family donated her organs to help others live.

The Sea View teen-ager was struck by a 1991 Honda sedan as she and three friends crossed Richmond Avenue in front of Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Springville after leaving a friend's Sweet 16 party early Sunday morning.

Prior to joining her school's junior varsity softball team, Miss Forsyth played CYO softball for five years for St. Rita's R.C. Church, Meiers Corners, where she was a parishioner.

She also was a member of Susan Wagner's twirling team and enjoyed going to the beach to tan, photography, dancing and visiting her grandfather in the Florida Keys, where they went fishing.

"Someone from the school told me she was like the leader of the United Nations up there [at the school], because she had friends of every race, religion and color," said her sister, Jennifer Forsyth. "To her, everyone was the same. It was the kind of person you were on the inside. Nothing else mattered."

Dozens of Amanda's friends filled her Web site account on while she was in critical condition with touching messages. One read: "Dear Amanda my Panda, I (along with mostly all of wagner nd ur family) luv u to death! this feels so unreal to us ... this came straight outta a movie ... please get well and pull things together for us ... we can't live without u."

Spending time with friends and family was important to Miss Forsyth, who demonstrated her dedication to her grandparents, who suffered from Alzheimer's, by going to visit them often, her sister said.

Describing Miss Forsyth as a "very picky shopper," her sister said she always had to find the perfect item and frequented the returns line.

Miss Forsyth was also in great demand as a baby-sitter.

"She could singlehandedly handle a family of six children," said Jennifer Forsyth.

In addition to her sister, surviving Miss Forsyth are her parents, Warren and Diane Forsyth; her maternal grandparents, Milford and Antoinette Jones; her paternal grandparents, Alexander and Carol Forsyth; her brother, Robert, and her sisters, Cariane and Juliane Forsyth.

The funeral will be Monday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Rita's Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
