An Oberleutnant and Flugzeugführer [pilot] with 1 Staffel Kampfgeschwader 76, he died during an attack on RAF Kenley when his aircraft (Do17Z; wn:2504; F1+1H) was shot down, by a Hurricane piloted by Pilot Officer Alan Francis Eckford of 32 Squadron RAF, and crashed at Mill Lane, Hurst Green, Surrey. The Bordfunker [wireless operator] Unteroffizier Paul Gengel and a Kriegsberichter [war reporter] Oberleutnant Walter Surk were also killed in the incident. Stoldt was promoted to Hauptmann posthumously.

Originally buried in the North-West corner of St Mary the Virgin Churchyard Extension, Oxted, Surrey.
