Tadeusz was declared "Missing In Action" when the New Orleans, during the Battle of Tassafaronga, was hit by a Japanese torpedo which detonated the ship's forward magazines and gasoline tanks. Tadeusz was awarded the Purple Heart.
The New Orleans survived the explosion.
He was not officially declared as being dead by the military until December 1, 1943, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.
