Johann A. Gerhardt, born in Lippehne, Soldin, Brandenburg, Prussia. With his brother Carl, he immigrated to the United States in 1852, living in Milwaukee for two years before homesteading in Neenah, WI in 1854. About 1857 John married Wilhelmina, also from Prussia. At this point, little is known about her other than she immigrated to the U.S. in 1856 according to the 1900 Federal Census.

John was one of the early pioneers in the Neenah-Menasha area. A carpenter, contractor and architect, he built a successful construction company. He employed many workers and, in his day, his company built many of the homes and businesses in Neenah and some in Menasha, also. He was also a Neenah city alderman.

John was a private in the 9th Independent Battery, Wisconsin Light Artillery during the Civil War.

He became crippled in 1884 and lost his contracting business. He changed occupation to confectioner, locating his business at N. 312 Commercial in Neenah. His son Henry worked with him in this business.

The local news paper of his day, the Neenah City Times, said of him and his family, "...a more steady and respectable one cannot be found..." and "Mr. Gerhardt was an honest, hard-working man..."
