Katherine was born March 21, 1922, the fifth of six children to Melville Prince Hughes and Celia Elizabeth (Clack) Hughes, at Park Hospital in Mason City.

She grew up and attended school in Clear Lake, graduating high school in 1940. While in high school she was involved in several music activities, playing the French horn in band and orchestra. She also was in glee club, mixed chorus, and small groups. As a senior, she played a French horn at the National Music Contest in Minneapolis, and received a 1 rating. She was also a well know soloist in Clear Lake.

After graduating, Katherine attended Mason City Junior College (NIACC) for two years, then attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) for one year. During World War II, when teachers were scarce, she was hired on an emergency certificate to teach in Stanley, IA. She then returned to ISTC and graduated with a major in voice in 1947. She taught in Cedar Falls, Harlan, and Denison. She returned to Clear Lake and worked for two years as the head bookkeeper in the Clear Lake office of P.G. & E (Interstate Power).

On August 16, 1953, Katherine was united in marriage to the love of her life, Glenn Leslie Short, postmaster in Stanley, at First Congregational Church, Clear Lake. He preceded her in death on August 30, 1979.

She returned to teaching and taught in Stanley, Independence, Fayette, Strawberry Point, the Starmont School District, and Oelwein School District. The last twelve years of her career she taught in Oelwein, teaching music to first, second, and third graders. While living in Stanley, she was the pianist and organist at Stanley Methodist Church from 1953-1979. She retired from teaching in 1982, and returned to Clear Lake.

Katherine was a lifelong member of First Congregational Church in Clear Lake, an active member of Women's Fellowship, and served on the Board of Trustees and the Board of Deacons of the church. For several years she was one of the "Angel Ladies," spending many hours making handcrafted, one of a kind angels for the church's Fall Festival. She was a 70 plus year member of Chapter EA, P.E.O. in Clear Lake; one of 15 P.E.O. members in her family.

Katherine enjoyed knitting, making layette sets for all of her grandchildren to come home from the hospital in. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading and watching TV. Most of all she enjoyed the times spent with her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and their families.

Katherine was survived by three daughters, three sons-in-law, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn; a daughter, Suellen Tempus; an infant grandson, Richard Glenn Henely; a son-in-law, Richard Shaw; and siblings, Melville W. "Bud" Hughes, Mary Ann Hughes, Elizabeth Morrissey, Margaret Doudna, and Richard R. "Dick" Hughes.
