Captain Alexander H. Cornell, a retired Navy captain and Professor Emeritus at Rhode Island College - Son of the late Alexander D. Cornell and Elsie (Walker) Cornell.

Born in Springfield, MA in 1918; he passed away at his Palm Beach Gardens' home.

Captain Cornell was educated at Union College, graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and History with highest honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Over the years, he acquired a Master of Science degree from Ohio State University, a Doctor of Philosophy in Management from American University and graduated from both middle and senior colleges at the Naval War College, Newport. He served as a professor twice at the Naval War College.

After graduation from Union College and a brief teaching experience, he joined the Navy as an Ensign and remained a career officer for thirty-one years, retiring in 1973. He received numerous commendations while in the Navy and as a professor at the Naval War College, where he held the James V. Forrestal Chair of Military Management, the first military man to be so appointed.

In 1973 he joined the Preservation Society of Newport, as Comptroller and served for two years. He then accepted an appointment in 1975 as Associate Professor of Economics and Management at Rhode Island College to assist in developing the new Department of Economics and Management, the first military man to be so appointed. Promoted to full professor in 1980, he became Chairman of the Department and then, upon his retirement in 1983 was designated as Professor Emeritus; which is a most distinguished lifelong status, offered to very few. He continued teaching for the Naval War College and Rhode Island College for three more years until he retired to Florida in 1986.

During his career he served on nine warfare ships-cruisers, carriers, destroyer tenders and with the Sea Bees. He was Fleet Logistics Officer for the U.S./ Sixth Fleet and commanded Navy Schools and major ship’s parts and weapons programs.

The author of several books and articles on business management, his text on Systems Analysis is still in use in colleges and universities. He was selected to be a NATO Distinguished Fellow in 1989.

Captain Cornell was a member of the Newport Reading Room, the Newport Country Club and the American Management Association. He made his home at "Seaspray" on Ocean Avenue with his first wife, Elizabeth M. Cornell, who died in 1970, and then with his second wife, Muriel A. Cornell, Professor of English and Linguistics at Rhode Island College, whom he married in 1971, and who passed away in 2012.
