Donald Hamrick had the unique job as the ship fitter onboard America's naval vessels. This job required him to Maintain piping and the steel hull, as well as operate the fire Extinguisher and life resuscitating devices. The ship Hamrick was assigned to in late 1942 was the USS Block Island, named after an island off the coast of New York. This carrier was very unique as it was a member of the Hunter-Killer group, going after german U-Boats. After successfully sinking over six german U-Boats the Block Islands luck ran out and the ship took three torpedo hits from U-549. The screen protecting the Block Island was able to take out the German sub, but the Block Island was unable to stay afloat. Being a ship fitter, Donald Hamrick was one of the few essential crew members who stayed aboard to repair the ship. This was the only American Carrier to sink in the war in the Atlantic. Hamrick would survive the sinking, and would later go on to serve on the next block island carrier, as well as work on repair ships off of Okinawa.
