Over the years, he avidly served on the YMCA of Parkersburg (W.Va.) board of directors and was an active member of the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church parish. He was awarded the Distinguished Bishop's Cross of Wheeling Charleston Diocese. He also served on the school board of Parkersburg Catholic Schools, where his children and many of his grandchildren attended. In 2008, he chaired the Parkersburg Catholic Schools Capital Campaign.
Born in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1948, he graduated from Bishops Rosecrans High School and attended Ohio University, both in Zanesville. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy. In 1980, he founded Architectural Interior Products, Inc. (AIP) in a small warehouse in Boaz, W.Va., and remained the company's president and principal owner until this death.
Over the years, AIP expanded its product offerings and opened locations in Parkersburg, Dunbar, and Fairmont, W.Va., and Bristol, Va.
Tom McCarty is survived by Leta McCarty, his wife of 47 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary McCarty, and his daughter Margaret Elizabeth. A Full Catholic Mass will be offered on Saturday, May 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Parkersburg Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery.
