Nelda Nadine (Killgore) Barton, 86, of La Grange, Texas passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2015.

Nelda was born on November 2, 1928, in Hominy, Osage County, Oklahoma to Versa Myrle Phillippe and George Washington Killgore.

She attended the public schools and graduated from Hominy High School in 1946. During her high school years, she was the pianist at the First Christian Church and Hominy High School Glee Club.

After graduation she attended Phillips University at Enid, OK and the University of Oklahoma at Norman. She received a BS Degree in Education in June, 1950, from the University of Oklahoma. She received a Master's Degree in Education from Prairie View A & M in August, 1974.

Nelda married Richard L. Barton on Dec. 24, 1946, at the First Christian Church in Hominy, OK. They had been married 56 years when he died on June 21, 2003.

She taught school in Seagraves, TX, Enid, OK, New Madrid and Portageville, MO., Lamar Consolidated in Rosenberg, Smithville and La Grange, putting in a total of 31 years in the classroom.

She was also active in church groups wherever the family lived. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society, an honorary teachers’ organization for over 50 years, as well as an active member of the Fayette County Retired Teachers’ Association. Another volunteer activity was with the Road to Recovery Cancer program assisting in taking patients for radiation and chemotherapy treatments. And she was also a member of St. Mark’s Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by daughter, Regina Keilers and husband, Armin; daughter-in-law, Nonnie Barton; 6 grandchildren: Stacy Mehrens and husband, Mickey; Richard L. Barton, III (Trey) and wife, Melissa; Tanya Keilers Tousek and husband, Darrin; Tara Keilers Childs and husband, Clayton; Toni and Todd Keilers, 4 great grand-daughters: Jacqueline and Camryn Barton and Addyson Mehrens and Blair Tousek; great grandson, Cade Mehrens; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; son, Richard L (Dickie) Barton Jr.; and her only brother, Mancil E. Killgore.

Visitation will be held at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home. Family will receive friends.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 110 W. Walnut St., La Grange, TX. Burial will follow at La Grange City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul ELCA, P. O. Box 567, La Grange, TX 78945; St. Mark’s Hospital Foundation, One St. Mark’s Place, La Grange, TX 78945; or to the charity of their choice.
