Joseph Sherwood Came to the Town of Springfield from New York state in 1856. He married Alice Safford on July 3, 1858.

He bought the land that makes up Sherwood Cemetery from Patrick Dunn, his brother-in-law. The following children were born to Joseph and Alice: Louisa Harriet (1859), Daniel (1861), Jessie Viola (1864), Alice F (1867), Frankie Corrine (1868), Joseph Dyer (1870), and Effie Pearl (1874). Daniel and Frankie died as children. Effie married Oluf Bowen, Joseph married Maria Hegg (May 12, 1892), and Jessie's married name was Schroeder.

Joseph sold his Springfield farm in the 1890s and purchased a farm in Whitehall. He married Mrs. Agnes Plummer in Whitehall on November 10, 1896.

The census of the Town of Springfield dated July 30, 1870 lists the Sherwood family as Joseph (35), Alice (29), Louisa (10), Daniel (9), Jessie (6) and Frank (2).
