Missioner Lough Dies at Age 81
LONDON, Ont., - Maj. Samuel Parkinson Lough, 81, who did mission work for the Indians of the Hudson Bay area and among the destitute in Chicago's skid row, died here Saturday. Born in Ireland, he was educated at Colgate University, New York and Union Theological Seminary in Rochester, N. Y.
After his ordination, he worked in the Hudson Bay area for the Baptist Mission Society, and was entrusted by the Canadian Government with looking after all serums and medicines in the region and performed medical and dental services.
When the First World War began, he recruited a battalion in northern Manitoba and went overseas with the 27th Infantry Battalion from Winnipeg.
For 26 years from 1923 when he was admitted to the Chicago Presbytery, until his retirement 14 years ago, Major Lough worked in skid row and was financial secretary of the Presbyterian Mission there.
