WILLIAM O. "BILL" GATES

GATES, WILLIAM O. "BILL" Age 66, passed away March 15th. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Alma Gates of Montgomery. Survivors are his sister, Pat Mansfield of Boulder, CO; and nephews, James and Paul Mansfield. Bill was known all over the South for his road racing feats in the 70's and 80's, running numerous races on weekends and winning most of them. One weekend he ran the Vulcan Run, he ran a 33 minute 10K on Saturday, and followed up with a 2:36 marathon (Vulcan) with a 3rd overall finish. He placed 2nd at the first 50-mile run in Atlanta, GA. Bill graduated from Sidney Lanier High School, Montgomery, in 1962. He went on to graduate from Livingston University (University of West Alabama) in 1968, where he was the Captain of the track team. Bill retired from the State of Alabama Employment Service. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force. Bill will be highly missed by the Birmingham Track Club and the running community. He will especially be missed on the 4th of July, where he manned the water station at the turnaround at Peavine Falls for many years after his running days were over. Bill will be missed most by his dear friend and teammate, Larry Duncan, who cared for him at his most needed time and other caregivers and running mates Stan Arthur, Clayton and Sylvia Nichols, and Johnny Montgomery. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 18th at White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home, 909 Lincoln Rd, Montgomery, AL 36109.
