An Oberleutnant zur See in the 3rd Staffel (Squadron) of Küstenfliegergruppe (Coastal Group) 506 he was killed when his aircraft (He115; Wn.2081; S4+BL), on a low-level night-flight, collided with the radio location mast at West Beckham before crashing onto the beach at Sheringham. The rest of the crew, Oberfeldwebel Emil Rödel and Oberfeldwebel Karl Ullmann, also perished.

Wodtke's body was washed ashore on 19 December 1939 and was originally buried on 23 December 1939 in Section BW Grave 385 at Sheringham Cemetery, Norfolk.
