An Unteroffizier and Bordmechaniker [Flight Engineer] of Stab Kampgeschwader 26 he was killed when his aircraft (He11H-2; Wn.5449; 1H+JA) was attacked by fighters (including one flown by Flight Lieutenant "Archie" McKellar of 602 Squadron RAF) when on an armed photographic reconnaissance mission over the Firth of Forth. The aircraft subsequently made a crash landing at Long Newton Farm near Haddington, Scotland. His colleague, Gefreiter and Bordfunker [Wireless Operator] Bruno Reimann was also killed in the same incident.
