Stuart served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He joined his first fire company at the age of 18. He was a 50-year member of the Guilderland Center Fire Company and served as chief several times. He was a member of the Noah Masonic Lodge and a member of the Masons for 65 years. He retired in 1988 from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as a senior hydraulics engineer.
