John William "Jack" Bender, 84 of Altoona died early Monday morning April 27, 2015 at his residence.
He was born June 17, 1930 in Altoona a son of the late Russel and Helena (Duffy) Bender. He married Shirley Burkett on October 30, 1951 in Gallitzin, Pa. with 64 years of marriage.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter Laura Wapinski and husband Jim of Altoona; a son Jay Bender and wife Verna of Altoona; three grandchildren Wendy, Tammi, and Shirley; and eleven great grandchildren
Jack was preceded in death by a sister Jean Merva.
Mr. Bender was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
He was a 1949 graduate of Gallitzin High School.
He was in the Marine Reserves.
Jack retired in 1992 from Butterick with 43 years of service.
He was a member of the Bavarian Aid Society and the Gallitzin American Legion.
He enjoyed bowling, taking walks with his wife, shooting pool, and playing poker.
Friends will be received from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday April 29, 2015 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday April 30, 2015 at the St. Rose of Lima , Altoona with Rev. Brian Saylor officiating. Interment will be made at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Central PA Humane Society, 1837 E Pleasant Valley Blvd, Altoona, PA 16602.
